ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on its affiliates and workers across the country to prepare for a fresh battle over the national minimum wage, declaring that the current ₦70,000 wage has become a “poverty wage” amid rising living costs.
The labour union said the current minimum wage is no longer sufficient to meet the basic needs of Nigerian workers, as inflation and the increasing cost of food, transportation, housing and other essential goods continue to put pressure on households.
The NLC urged workers and its affiliated unions to remain prepared for what could become a major struggle for improved wages and better living conditions.
The development comes amid growing concerns over the widening gap between workers' incomes and the cost of living, with labour unions increasingly demanding wage adjustments to reflect current economic realities.
The NLC's position is expected to intensify discussions between organised labour and the Federal Government over workers' welfare and the sustainability of the ₦70,000 national minimum wage.
