At the age of 89, renowned Nigerian scholar, biologist, poet, and former professor at the University of Ibadan, Prof. Dr. Dr. Mark Nwagwu, successfully defended a second Ph.D.
An academic career lasting more than 60 years reached yet another milestone with the completion of the most recent doctorate in anthropology at the Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan.
In 1957, Prof. Nwagwu started his academic career at the University College in Ibadan. The University of London awarded him a Bachelor of Science in Zoology in 1961 and a Master of Science in Zoology in 1965. He received his first doctorate in zoology from Stockholm University in Sweden that same year.
He researched on myosin messenger RNA and muscle-protein synthesis during his postdoctoral studies at the University of Connecticut in the United States from 1966 to 1969.
Nwagwu advanced from Senior Lecturer to Reader over his illustrious academic career, and in 1982 he was appointed Professor of Zoology. Afterwards, he worked at the University of Ibadan until his retirement in 2002, specialising in cell and molecular biology. Additionally, he was appointed as an Associate Professor and Assistant Professor at Brock University in Canada.
In addition to his contributions to research, Prof. Nwagwu has published novels and poems after retiring.
Because of his outstanding accomplishments in both science and the humanities, he is still the only academic from Nigeria to hold fellowships in both the Association of Nigerian Authors and the Nigerian Academy of Science.
On social media, friends, coworkers, and past pupils have all praised him for successfully defending a second doctorate at the age of 89.
