The Onion Producers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria (OPMAN) has warned that Nigeria could face shortages of rice and tomatoes within the next three months if urgent action is not taken to address the worsening insecurity affecting farming communities across the country. The warning was issued by the association's National President, Aliyu Isah Maitasamu, during the National Executive Council meeting of the Onion, Tomato and Chili Pepper Association of Nigeria (OTACCWA).
According to the association, persistent attacks by bandits, kidnappers, and other criminal groups have forced many farmers to abandon their farmlands, significantly reducing food production. It warned that unless farmers can safely return to their fields, the country may experience a sharp decline in the supply of key staple foods, leading to higher prices and increased pressure on households.
The association called on the Federal Government to strengthen security in agricultural communities, support farmers with improved access to inputs and financing, and implement measures to prevent a major food crisis. It stressed that timely intervention is critical to protecting food production and ensuring national food security.
