ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu has said that the security crises in Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali are contributing significantly to the rising wave of insecurity in Nigeria.
The president made the remarks on Thursday while receiving the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, during a courtesy visit to the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Tinubu disclosed that the terrorists responsible for the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State had demanded the release of their detained members in addition to ransom payments.
"That was one of their conditions outside of the money they were looking for. We said no deal, and we won't negotiate with criminals," the president said.
He added that the kidnappers had killed one of the teachers and insisted that the Federal Government would not bow to pressure from criminal groups.
According to Tinubu, some of the suspects involved in violent activities in Nigeria are foreign nationals, stressing that instability in the Sahel region is worsening Nigeria's internal security situation.
"You see the problem in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger Republic. It's adding more fuel to our challenges," he stated.
The president reiterated the need to strengthen Nigeria's security architecture by enhancing the capacity of forest guards and establishing state police structures across the country.
Tinubu maintained that improving local security systems and increasing collaboration between federal and state authorities would help address the growing threats posed by terrorism, banditry and cross-border crimes.
