Every Senior Prefect Had My Number When I Was Gov; Go Ask Anyone If I Didn’t Visit Their School - Obi

Peter Obi, the former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), defended his education record, saying his administration maintained close contact with students and school leaders while actively monitoring conditions across secondary schools throughout Anambra State.

According to a video posted on the official YouTube channel of Channels Television on Sunday, July 26, 2026, while responding to questions about his education record, Obi explained how he remained connected with students and regularly visited schools statewide.

Obi said his administration encouraged direct communication with students, explaining that senior prefects had access to his phone number and that he personally visited schools to motivate learners, monitor facilities, and strengthen relationships between government officials and educational communities regularly.

During the interview, he stated, “every senior prefect had my phone number. It was working. I was going there, and I was encouraging them. Most of them still send me text messages to this day. 

I did not know all of them by name, but I knew them as the senior prefect of this school or the senior prefect of that school. That was how I knew them. We worked together, and I visited their schools. Go and ask anybody who was in secondary school when I was governor whether I visited their school.”

He maintained that his engagement with students went beyond official meetings, arguing that frequent school visits allowed him to understand challenges directly, encourage academic excellence, and build trust with school leaders and young people across the state consistently.

Obi also suggested that anyone who attended secondary school during his administration could verify his claims, insisting that his presence in schools and interaction with students were well known and formed part of his approach to educational governance.

In his concluding remarks, Obi reiterated that his administration prioritised accessibility, student engagement, and regular school visits, maintaining that those who experienced his tenure firsthand could confirm his commitment to supporting education and maintaining direct communication with school communities.
