A commercial bus driver, Ifeanyi Ukwaja, has been arrested for allegedly causing a fatal crash deliberately after a disagreement with a passenger during a trip from Onitsha to Lagos.
Ukwaja, a driver with Agbasi City Mass Transit Nigeria Limited and a native of Umegunpa in Ahiazu Mbaise LGA, Imo State, reportedly loaded passengers from Onitsha earlier this month. Along the journey, he got into a heated argument with a passenger and allegedly threatened to "deal with" him.
Police said that after passing Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State, Ukwaja intentionally rammed the bus into a truck parked by the roadside, apparently targeting the passenger he had quarrelled with.
The passenger, seated at the front right side of the bus, died instantly from the impact. Several other passengers sustained varying degrees of injury.
Instead of reporting the incident, the driver allegedly abandoned the scene, picked up his bag, and fled to his hometown in Ahiazu Mbaise.
He was later traced by the transport company and arrested by Inspector Monday Christova on July 18, 2026. He was handed over for transfer to Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, where he will face prosecution.
