The Nigerian Senate on Thursday confirmed Professor Abayomi Fasina as a non-career ambassador after a heated session marked by objections from some lawmakers over previous allegations of sexual harassment.
Despite the concerns raised during deliberations, the Senate approved his nomination based on a clean bill of health issued by its Committee on Foreign Affairs, security clearances from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS), as well as testimonies from the governing council of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, where Fasina served as Vice-Chancellor.
The confirmation followed the committee’s recommendation that there was no legal or security impediment to his appointment.
The development has continued to generate public reactions, with supporters pointing to the Senate’s clearance process, while critics maintain concerns over the earlier allegations.
