The University of Port Harcourt has honoured its best graduating students for the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 academic sessions with a tree-planting ceremony at the institution’s newly established Convocation Garden.
The ceremony formed part of activities marking the University’s 36th combined convocation ceremony and was designed to celebrate academic excellence while promoting environmental sustainability.
The honourees were Miss Loveth Onyeagubor of the Department of Curriculum Studies and Educational Technology, who emerged as the overall best graduating student for the 2023/2024 academic session with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.94, and Mr Daniel Oyibo of the Department of Finance and Banking, who emerged as the overall best graduating student for the 2024/2025 academic session with a CGPA of 4.82.
Speaking during the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Owunari Abraham Georgewill, said the tree-planting initiative symbolises growth, excellence, sustainability, and the enduring legacy of academic achievement.
According to him, the trees planted by the outstanding graduates will serve as lasting reminders of their exceptional contributions to the university community and their commitment to academic excellence.
Georgewill noted that the initiative reflects the institution’s desire to celebrate excellence in a meaningful way while encouraging environmental consciousness among students and staff.
The Vice-Chancellor congratulated the award recipients for their remarkable academic accomplishments and encouraged other students to strive for excellence in their studies.
The ceremony attracted members of the university management, staff, students, and other stakeholders who gathered to celebrate the achievements of the outstanding graduates.
The Convocation Garden is expected to serve as a permanent symbol of excellence, preserving the memories of top-performing students and inspiring future generations of scholars at the University of Port Harcourt.
