Washington, D.C. – United States President Donald Trump has again criticised European allies and NATO members over what he described as their failure to support the US-Israel military campaign against Iran, saying although Washington did not need their help, it would have been appreciated if they had at least offered it.
Trump made the remarks on Wednesday during an Oval Office meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, where he expressed frustration that alliance members did not take part in the military effort. According to him, the United States defeated Iran quickly and without external assistance, but the lack of solidarity from European allies remained disappointing.
“We didn’t need assistance on this at all. We defeated them in literally the first week,” Trump said, adding that while the help was unnecessary, “it would have been nice if they had offered.” He also indicated that the issue would form part of his private discussions with Rutte as tensions continue to simmer within the transatlantic alliance.
The meeting comes less than two weeks before NATO’s annual summit in Ankara, where burden-sharing, troop commitments and fallout from the Iran conflict are expected to dominate discussions. Rutte has been trying to calm tensions by pointing to rising European defence spending and allied cooperation during the conflict, but Trump has continued to signal dissatisfaction with several member states.
Trump nonetheless praised Rutte personally during the meeting, describing him as a “great guy” and a strong NATO leader, even as he renewed his criticism of the alliance’s response to the Iran war. The remarks underscore the increasingly strained relationship between Washington and some European capitals at a time of heightened global security uncertainty.
