Many Nigerians are calling for a boycott of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), arguing that the scheme exposes young graduates to unnecessary danger amid the country's worsening security situation.
Opponents of the programme say asking graduates to travel across Nigeria for mandatory service is increasingly difficult to justify as kidnappings, terrorist attacks, and violent crimes continue to affect several parts of the country.
“In this current insecurity, you still wan go serve for another state?” one Nigerian asked.
Another wrote, “NYSC will do more harm to our family. You can’t travel in peace again without being kidnapped.”
Others added, “Travel to serve and be kidnapped. Choose your safety,” and “Why are you guys even going for NYSC when the govt won’t come to your aid if you get kidnapped?”
Some also questioned the relevance of the scheme, arguing that it consumes a year of graduates' lives while offering little value in return.
“I didn't go for NYSC, it never stopped me for any employment! Pls boycott NYSC. Especially in this time of crisis!” another Nigerian stated.
While some Nigerians continue to support NYSC on the grounds of national unity and integration, growing numbers are insisting that the safety of young graduates should take precedence over mandatory deployment.
