Abuja — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a final six-month extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, allowing him to remain in office until February 2027.
The development was announced in a statement issued on Thursday by the President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. Adeniyi's first tenure extension was scheduled to expire on August 1, 2026.
According to the Presidency, the additional six months will enable the Customs boss to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window project and ensure a smooth and orderly succession process within the service.
During the transition period, Adeniyi is expected to work with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to oversee the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and enforce the compulsory retirement of officers who have either attained the age of 60 or completed 35 years in service.
Adeniyi was appointed Comptroller-General of Customs by President Tinubu in June 2023 after serving in various capacities within the service. His career progression saw him rise to the rank of Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023.
A graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Adeniyi joined the Nigeria Customs Service in the late 1980s and has spent nearly four decades in the agency, rising through the ranks to become its highest-ranking officer.
The Presidency said the extension is intended to strengthen ongoing reforms and facilitate a seamless leadership transition in the Nigeria Customs Service.
