Presidential candidate Peter Obi has stated that he sees no justification for the continued imprisonment of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, insisting that no one should be jailed simply for expressing opinions or criticising public figures.
Speaking during an engagement with members of the Nigerian diaspora in Washington, D.C., Obi said he has consistently maintained that Kanu should not be incarcerated.
According to him, calling people names or criticising leaders should not be considered a criminal offence, stressing that politicians are often subjected to harsh criticism as part of public life.
Obi also said that if given the opportunity to lead, he would engage agitators through dialogue rather than confrontation.
He noted that understanding the grievances of such groups through consultation and discussion is key to finding lasting solutions to their concerns.
Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is currently serving a life sentence after being convicted by a Federal High Court in Abuja in November 2025 on terrorism-related charges, including incitement, membership of a proscribed organisation, and alleged involvement in attacks linked to separatist activities in the South-East.
