Thailand’s Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendira Debyavati has reportedly died at the age of 47, nearly four years after falling into a coma following a serious heart condition in 2022.
The royal palace confirmed that the princess, the eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn and once seen as a potential heir to the throne, passed away on June 11 in Bangkok.
She had collapsed during a dog-training event in northeastern Thailand and was later airlifted to hospital, where she remained in critical condition. Reports say her illness was linked to a severe heart arrhythmia and complications from infection, followed by multiple organ-related complications over time.
Her death has triggered deep national mourning, with citizens gathering outside Bangkok’s Grand Palace and Chulalongkorn Hospital to pay their respects.
Leaders, including Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, described her passing as a profound loss for the nation.
Born in 1978, she was highly educated, holding law degrees from Thammasat University and Cornell Law School, and previously served at Thailand’s UN mission and as a public prosecutor.
A long period of illness has now ended in a national moment of grief for Thailand.
