Houston, United States — Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has become the second-oldest player to score in FIFA World Cup history after netting a brace in his country’s 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan at the 2026 tournament.
Ronaldo, aged 41 years and 138 days, reached the milestone on Tuesday as he inspired Portugal to a commanding Group K win in Houston. The two goals also made him the first player ever to score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments, further extending his place in football history.
Only Cameroon legend Roger Milla, who scored at the 1994 World Cup aged 42 years and 39 days, remains ahead of Ronaldo on the all-time list of oldest goalscorers in the tournament. Portugal’s Pepe is third after scoring at 39 years and 283 days during the 2022 World Cup, while Lionel Messi and Sweden’s Gunnar Gren complete the top five.
Ronaldo’s brace came after he faced criticism for failing to score in Portugal’s opening 1-1 draw against DR Congo. His response against Uzbekistan not only revived Portugal’s campaign but also added another landmark to a career already filled with major international records.
