The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, on Friday commissioned a newly constructed ultra-modern Community Secondary School in Eliozu, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, describing the project as a demonstration of his commitment to educational development and grassroots empowerment.
The state-of-the-art facility, located within Obio/Akpor State Constituency I, comprises a six-classroom block, a well-equipped library, staff offices, restrooms for teachers and students, a power generating set and other modern learning amenities designed to enhance teaching and learning.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Amaewhule expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for ongoing federal development projects in Rivers State and paid glowing tribute to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, whom he described as the political leader of Rivers State and a strong supporter of grassroots development initiatives.
“I want to specially thank my leader, His Excellency Nyesom Wike. He worked tirelessly to ensure that we continue to reach out to our people through impactful projects that directly affect their lives,” the Speaker said.
Amaewhule disclosed that he personally acquired the two plots of land on which the school was built, noting that the institution had previously suffered from severe classroom shortages. He explained that construction commenced in November 2025 and was completed within seven months.
To further support academic activities in the school, the Speaker announced the donation of a power generating set and pledged to bear the cost of fueling and maintaining the generator throughout the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) period to ensure that candidates write their examinations in a conducive environment.
He also made additional donations to the school and encouraged the students to remain focused on their studies, wishing the WASSCE candidates success in their examinations.
Amaewhule informed the gathering that the Eliozu school project is one of several constituency interventions spread across the wards of Obio/Akpor State Constituency I. According to him, ongoing projects under his representation include markets, schools, town halls and healthcare facilities aimed at improving the welfare of residents.
The Speaker used the occasion to canvass support for President Tinubu’s administration, citing key federal infrastructure projects such as the Eleme Section of the East-West Road and the Bonny-Bodo Road as evidence of the President’s commitment to the development of Rivers State.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Chief Tony Okocha, described Amaewhule as a leader committed to excellence and community development.
“This project demonstrates the Speaker’s passion for education and the future of our children. The students must take ownership of this facility and ensure it is properly maintained,” Okocha stated.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Council and Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Gift Worlu, described the project as a practical demonstration of genuine love and selfless service to the people.
According to him, the quality of the facility compares favourably with educational institutions in advanced countries and reflects the Speaker’s dedication to improving educational standards in the constituency.
Speaking on behalf of members of the Tenth Rivers State House of Assembly, the Majority Leader, Hon. Major Jack, commended Amaewhule for combining effective legislative leadership with impactful constituency projects. He noted that lawmakers were proud of the Speaker’s vision and commitment to delivering democratic dividends to the people.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Principal of Community Secondary School, Eliozu, expressed appreciation to the Speaker for what she described as a transformational educational intervention. She noted that the facility would significantly improve the school’s learning environment and provide students with better opportunities to excel academically.
The commissioning ceremony attracted political leaders, government officials, traditional rulers, community stakeholders, party faithful and residents, many of whom described the project as a major milestone in educational development within Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
