Security consultant and lawyer Bulama Bukarti has said security agencies are aware of the criminal group responsible for the abduction of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, raising questions about the effectiveness of efforts to curb banditry in parts of northern Nigeria.
Bukarti made the assertion during an interview on Channels Television, on Sunday, 14 June, 2026 while discussing the circumstances surrounding the kidnapping and eventual killing of the former Nigerian Army spokesperson.
According to Bukarti, information about the group behind the abduction was not unknown to security authorities. He argued that the activities and areas of operation of the gang have been well established, making the tragedy even more troubling.
“We know the group that abducted him. It was the group of Kachalla Muhammed group. The security forces knows the Local Government Areas they are operating in Katsina State,” Bukarti said.
The security analyst maintained that the continued operations of such groups despite the knowledge of their locations highlight the challenges facing the country’s security architecture. He noted that criminal gangs have established strongholds in several rural communities, enabling them to launch attacks, carry out kidnappings and evade arrest.
Bukarti stressed the need for more proactive and intelligence-driven operations to dismantle the networks of bandits and kidnappers. He argued that identifying criminal groups is only the first step and that authorities must follow through with sustained efforts to disrupt their activities and protect vulnerable communities.
