A 23-year-old pregnant woman in India allegedly took her own l!fe after reportedly facing hum!liation from her husband, who is said to have demanded a DNA test for her unborn child.
The incident led to the arrest of her husband and mother-in-law in Hyderabad on Saturday, June 27, 2026.
The deceased, G Sushmita, was found hanging in her residence in Gadipeddapur village of Alladurg mandal, Medak district, on the evening of June 25.
“We arrested her husband G Abhilash and his mother Laxmi. They were produced before the magistrate and sent to judicial remand,” said Alladurg sub-inspector D Shankar.
Sushmita was reportedly five months pregnant at the time of her d3ath.
In a complaint filed with the police, her mother, G Janabai, alleged that her daughter had endured ongoing physical and emotional abu$e from her husband, with the demand for a DNA test worsening her distress.
Sushmita, who was from Mothkupally village in Vikarabad district, had been married to Abhilash, a bangle seller from Gadipeddapur, for about 18 months.
"On June 23, my husband and I visited Sushmita’s house to discuss arrangements for the baby shower ceremony. While we were there, Abhilash had an argument about the ceremony and demanded a DNA test for the unborn child. Subsequently, elders from the community intervened and we returned home,” Janabai alleged in her police complaint.
According to the complaint, the request for a DNA test, made in the presence of both families, caused Sushmita significant embarrassment and emotional pain.
Relatives further alleged that the doubts cast on her character had a serious impact on her emotional well-being.
Two days later, on the evening of June 25, Sushmita allegedly d!ed by su!cide at her residence.
Her parents were reportedly informed of the incident by villagers.
Janabai also alleged that persistent hara$$ment from her husband and mother-in-law contributed to her daughter's decision to take the extreme step.
According to the complaint, Alladurg police registered a case on June 26 under sections 85 (husband or relative subjecting a woman to cruelty) and 108 (abetment of su!cide), read with section 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
After a post-mortem examination, Sushmita’s body was released to her parents.
