KANO, NIGERIA –The Kano State Police Command has announced a temporary restriction on vehicular and pedestrian movement in parts of the state ahead of the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency bye-election scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the restriction will apply within Dawakin Kudu and Warawa Local Government Areas as part of measures designed to ensure a peaceful, secure, and credible electoral process.
The decision followed resolutions reached at a meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), where security agencies finalized arrangements for the conduct of the poll.
Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori directed the full implementation of the election security plan, emphasizing the commitment of security agencies to maintaining law and order throughout the exercise.
“The security architecture developed with all ICCES partners will be fully deployed to guarantee a peaceful and orderly electoral process,” the statement noted.
The Command announced that movement restrictions will be enforced from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. on election day.
“There will be total restriction of vehicular and pedestrian movement within Dawakin Kudu and Warawa Local Government Areas from 1200hrs to 1700hrs on Saturday, June 20, 2026,” the statement added.
However, exemptions will be granted to officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accredited election observers, approved media personnel, and essential service providers carrying out official duties.
The police also disclosed that security personnel have been deployed to polling units, collation centres, and other strategic locations to safeguard voters, electoral officials, and election materials.
Residents were warned against engaging in electoral offences, including vote buying, ballot box snatching, violence, and the spread of misinformation.
The Command reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward electoral malpractice and warned that violators would face arrest and prosecution in accordance with the Electoral Act.
Citizens were further encouraged to remain law-abiding, comply with election guidelines, and report any suspicious activities to security agencies through designated emergency channels.
