The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ahmed Sanusi, has stirred public debate after describing det£ntion facilities under his command as "VIP cells" equipped with air conditioners and televisions where suspects can watch English Premier League matches.
The police chief made the remarks while speaking on the recent arr3st of individuals popularly referred to as "TikToking band!ts," who are accvsed of using social media platforms to issve thr£ats and spread pan!c among residents of Abuja.
According to the commissioner, the det£ntion facilities have been upgraded to meet humane standards, providing suspects with comfortable conditions while in police custody.
"Our cells are VIP. We have air conditioners and televisions to watch Premier League matches. Our svspects are enjoying," Sanusi reportedly said.
The commissioner explained that the improvements were part of eff0rts to ensure that svspects are treated with dignity and in line with human rights principles while awaiting the conclusion of invest!gations.
Earlier this year, Sanusi disclosed that air conditioners had been installed in police cells across the command to improve det£ntion cond!tions, adding that some detainees reportedly leave custody with positive impressions of their treatment.
