According to Daily Post Nigeria on June 2, 2026, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has expressed concern over the country's worsening security situation, criticizing political leaders for focusing on upcoming elections while kidnapped schoolchildren and other victims remain in captivity.
In a statement shared on his official platform, Obi highlighted a series of recent security incidents across the country, including killings, kidnappings and attacks in several states. He noted that schoolchildren abducted in Borno State and Oyo State on May 15 were still being held captive more than two weeks after their abduction despite ongoing efforts by security agencies.
The former Anambra State governor also referenced violent attacks in Plateau State, Kogi State and Anambra State. He cited reports of at least seven people killed and 10 others injured in an attack on Gwon-Ajang village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State. He also mentioned the reported abduction of more than 25 people and the killing of a resident during an attack on the Ayegunle-Igun community in Kogi State.
Obi further lamented the killing of two police officers in Anambra State and said the continued wave of attacks demonstrated the urgent need for stronger action to address Nigeria's security challenges.
“Meanwhile, amid all these tragic developments, we politicians remain consumed by the next election, paying far more attention to political ambitions than to the safety and well-being of our children and fellow citizens,” Obi stated.
He stressed that the persistent insecurity across different parts of the country requires immediate attention, warning that the safety of citizens should take precedence over political calculations and election-related activities.
