Owo Local Government Acting Chairman, Hon. Ibrahim Hammed, has commended the Ondo State government for approving the upgrade of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO) to University of Agricultural Science and Technology during the State Executive Council meeting held on June 2, 2026.
The Acting Chairman described the development as a landmark achievement and a significant step toward advancing higher education, agricultural innovation, research, and technological development in Ondo State.
While appreciating Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for the foresight and initiative, Hammed said the upgrade would create new opportunities for academic growth, attract investments, boost local economic activities, and enhance employment prospects for residents of Owo local government and Ondo State at large.
He also expressed optimism that the institution would play a pivotal role in producing skilled professionals capable of addressing contemporary challenges in agriculture, food security, science, and technology.
The Acting Chairman congratulated the Olowo of Owo, Oba Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, management, staff, students, alumni and the entire people of Owo local government on the historic development and urged stakeholders to support the successful transition of the institution into a world-class University.
Hon. Hammed also dismissed rumours of a kidnapping incident in a school within the Owo Local Government Area, describing the claim as false and misleading.
He urged residents to disregard the report and refrain from spreading unverified information, noting that misinformation can create unnecessary panic and fear across the community.
The Acting Chairman reassured the public that the local government is working closely with security agencies towards the safety and security of all residents.
