Three crew members escaped dêath after personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Delta rescued them from a capsized passenger boat along Bennett River in Warri, Delta State.
The rescue operation was carried out on May 21, 2026, when naval personnel on routine patrol spotted the stranded victims clinging to floating debris from their overturned boat.
According to information from NNS Delta, the boat capsized after it was hit by strong waves triggered by a heavy rainstorm, leaving the crew members stranded in the river.
Acting swiftly, the naval personnel launched a rescue operation, pulled the victims to safety and helped recover some of the items that were floating on the water following the acc!dent.
The rescued crew members were immediately taken to the NNS Delta Sick Bay, where they received medical attention and necessary treatment.
After responding positively to treatment, the three victims were later discharged.
The incident has again highlighted the dangers faced by waterway users during the rainy season, particularly when severe weather conditions create rough waves capable of overturning boats.
Residents and boat operators in the area have been urged to observe safety measures and exercise caution while travelling on waterways during adverse weather conditions.
The successful rescue also underscored the Nigerian Navy’s continued commitment to safeguarding lives and ensuring safety on the nation’s waterways through regular patrols and rapid emergency response operations.
