In the ever-evolving landscape of student leadership and advocacy in Nigeria, few young leaders have demonstrated the level of commitment, resilience, and passion exemplified by Comrade Abasifreke Sunday Ekanem, the Director of Humanitarian Affairs and Charity Advocacy, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Senate Secretariat.
A proud daughter of Ini Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, fondly known as “The Food Basket of Akwa Ibom State,” Comrade Abasifreke was born, nurtured, and raised in a community renowned for its rich agricultural heritage, abundant natural resources, and production of outstanding leaders. Her journey is one that reflects determination, excellence, and an unwavering commitment to service.
Her educational journey began at Future Hope Nursery and Primary School, Itak Ikot Obio Ise, Ini LGA, where she laid the foundation for her academic success. She later attended Prince Michael Comprehensive Secondary School, Itak Ikot Obio Ise, Ini LGA, where she distinguished herself both academically and in leadership.
Throughout her secondary school years, she consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities, serving as a Class Representative from JSS1 through SS3. Her peers and teachers entrusted her with greater responsibilities, culminating in her emergence as the Overall Senior Prefect. Her remarkable academic performance earned her numerous awards and recognitions, including graduating as the Best Graduating Student of the Year and also during a Competition received the prestigious Best Secondary School Student of the Year Award in Ini Local Government Area.
Driven by her passion for healthcare and community development, Comrade Abasifreke proceeded to the School of Health Information Management, University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), Uyo, where she obtained a Diploma with Distinction. Determined to further her contribution to the health sector, she gained admission to Abia State University (ABSU), where she is currently a 300-Level Medical Student studying Medicine and Surgery.
Her long-term aspiration is to become a successful Oncologist, contributing meaningfully to cancer care and healthcare advancement in Nigeria and beyond.
Beyond academics, Comrade Abasifreke is widely recognized for her dedication to humanitarian service and grassroots development. She is the Founder of the Grassroot Medical Awareness Campaign (GMAC), a charity-driven initiative established to improve health awareness, student welfare, education, and community development. Through GMAC, she has continued to champion impactful projects targeted at enhancing healthcare knowledge, promoting preventive medicine, and improving the quality of life within student and grassroots communities.
Over the years, she has consistently demonstrated an exceptional commitment to student advocacy, inclusivity, and welfare. Her impressive leadership portfolio includes service in several strategic positions, including:
