South Africa captain Ronwen Williams has expressed disappointment following Bafana Bafana’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The South Africans endured a difficult outing, finishing the game with nine players after two red cards. Speaking after the match, Williams said he was saddened by the lack of support from many African football fans, claiming that a significant number openly backed Mexico instead.
“Africans have always supported other African countries in every World Cup tournament, but I can’t figure out why our own case is different. Many Africans supported Mexico, not us. We almost shed tears, but it’s truly sad,” Williams said.
The goalkeeper called for greater unity among African nations, urging Africans to support one another on the global stage.
His comments have sparked discussions online, with some linking the reaction of African fans to South Africa’s history of xenophobic attacks against migrants from other African countries, including Nigerians and Ghanaians.
