Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman has raised serious concerns that up to 81% of claims in a massive $4 billion sex abuse settlement may be fraudulent.
The settlement—considered the largest of its kind in U.S. history—involves over 11,000 claims linked to alleged abuse in juvenile halls, foster homes, and children’s shelters dating back decades.
Hochman has now asked a court to pause payments until December 31, citing an ongoing criminal investigation into possible fake or inflated claims. According to his office, some individuals may have even been paid to file false abuse claims, potentially exploiting a system meant to support real survivors.
The case has sparked a major debate:
