The Lagos State University community has been thrown into mourning following the death of one of its students, Otabor Boluwatife Joseph, who succumbed to injuries sustained during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos.
Boluwatife, a student of the Department of History and International Studies in the Faculty of Arts, reportedly came under attack alongside some of his friends on the night of Friday, May 29, 2026, in an incident that occurred outside the university campus.
In a statement issued by the university's management, the institution expressed profound sadness over the student's death, describing it as a painful loss to the LASU community.
The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, extended condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones of the deceased, assuring them that the university shares in their grief during this difficult period.
According to the statement, the university swung into action immediately after receiving reports of the attack. The Acting Dean of Students' Affairs, Dr. Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, was said to have coordinated support efforts, briefed the Vice-Chancellor, and maintained communication with medical personnel overseeing the student's treatment while he remained hospitalized.
Despite efforts to save his life, Boluwatife passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.
Following his death, representatives of the university reportedly met with members of his family, officials of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, and law enforcement authorities as part of ongoing efforts to ensure that justice is served.
LASU management disclosed that it is actively collaborating with security agencies investigating the robbery attack and expressed confidence that those responsible for the crime would be identified and prosecuted.
The university described Boluwatife's death as a tragic loss and prayed for the repose of his soul while urging members of the university community to support his family during this period of mourning.
The incident has once again drawn attention to growing concerns about the safety of students living and moving around communities surrounding tertiary institutions in Lagos, with many stakeholders calling for stronger security measures to protect lives and property.
