Abuja, Nigeria — Former Kano State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has formally demanded a public retraction and apology from Primate Elijah Ayodele over alleged defamatory remarks made against him.
Kwankwaso’s legal team, Magaji Mato Ibrahim SAN & Co., in a demand letter, described the comments attributed to Ayodele as false, malicious and damaging to the politician’s reputation, credibility and political integrity. The lawyers gave the cleric 24 hours to issue a full public retraction and apology or face legal action.
The dispute reportedly stems from remarks allegedly made by Ayodele during a sermon and later circulated on social media, in which Kwankwaso was accused of being disloyal to NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi and of allegedly plotting to betray him. Kwankwaso’s lawyers argued that the publication was calculated to tarnish his public image and create distrust within the NDC and among its supporters.
The legal team further warned that failure to comply with the demands within the stipulated period could lead to a ₦10 billion defamation suit and other reliefs against the cleric. As of the time of filing this report, Ayodele had not publicly responded to the ultimatum.
