The teen murderer filed a Notice of Appeal and a Pauper’s Oath in Collin County’s 296th District Court, asking for a court-appointed lawyer and free transcripts because he says he can’t afford them.
The move kicks off the standard process to take his case to the Fifth Court of Appeals in Dallas. It changes nothing about the jury’s verdict or his 35-year prison sentence for now. Anthony remains locked up while courts review for any legal errors.
Critics quickly pointed out the Anthony family’s GoFundMe and other fundraisers pulled in more than $630,000. Many see the poverty claim as questionable at best after supporters poured out cash for his defense. The filing keeps the spotlight on a case that divided the nation, with supporters of the victim demanding the full sentence stand and justice be served without further delays.
