ABUJA, Nigeria – Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has criticized President Bola Tinubu, describing him as overwhelmed and incapable of effectively leading Nigeria.
Melaye made the remarks in Abuja during the third posthumous legacy colloquium held in honour of the late Raymond Dokpesi, where he faulted the President’s Democracy Day address.
The chieftain of the African Democratic Congress argued that Tinubu’s speech failed to address the economic hardship and security challenges confronting ordinary Nigerians.
According to Melaye, Nigeria’s current situation reflects a leadership crisis, insisting that the President lacks the capacity required to govern a complex and diverse nation.
“Any leader of this country who has failed in security and failed in welfare is a failed president. The president is wearing an oversized shoe. You cannot give what you don’t have,” he said.
He further stated that governing Nigeria requires a different level of leadership than managing a state such as Lagos, adding that the President appears overwhelmed by the demands of the office.
“Nigeria is not Lagos. He is overwhelmed. He does not have the intellectual, emotional, or physical capacity and capability to lead this country,” Melaye said.
The former senator also raised concerns over insecurity, citing the reported abduction and killing of serving military officers in recent years as evidence of the country’s worsening security situation.
He stressed that while he was not advocating the payment of ransom to criminal groups, the government must demonstrate greater capacity in protecting lives and securing the country.
Melaye maintained that if a government is unable to effectively address security and welfare challenges, its leaders should consider stepping aside.
His comments come amid ongoing debates over the state of Nigeria’s democracy, economy and security following President Tinubu’s nationwide broadcast marking 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.
