Iran has announced the funeral and burial schedule for its late Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, with ceremonies set to take place between July 4 and July 9. Iranian state media said the funeral rites will begin in Tehran before concluding with his burial in his hometown of Mashhad.
According to the official schedule, farewell ceremonies will be held at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Mosalla on July 4 and 5, followed by a funeral procession in the capital on July 6. Additional ceremonies are planned for the holy city of Qom on July 7 before the final burial in Mashhad on July 9.
Khamenei, who led the Islamic Republic for nearly four decades, was killed on February 28 during the opening phase of a conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States, according to Iranian and international reports.
The 86-year-old cleric became Supreme Leader in 1989 following the death of Ruhollah Khomeini and remained one of the most influential figures in Middle Eastern politics throughout his tenure.
Iranian authorities said the extended funeral arrangements reflect both the wartime circumstances surrounding his death and the significance of his position within the country’s political and religious establishment. Islamic tradition typically calls for prompt burial, but exceptions are permitted under extraordinary circumstances.
The funeral ceremonies are expected to attract large crowds from across Iran and other countries, while regional leaders continue diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions in the Middle East.
