After revealing how an uninvited ₦10,000 present from a friend in the UK left her feeling uncomfortable, a woman has ignited internet discussions.
The incident occurred earlier this week in Lagos, following a casual discussion about life in Nigeria and the country's current economic challenges.
According to her account, the conversation focused on rising living costs and governance under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
She originally ignored a bank alert for ₦10,000, but then received a follow-up message advising her to "manage it."
“She asked how Nigeria was treating me and how I was coping with the economy. I told her I was fine. I didn’t complain or ask for help,” the lady recounted.
The woman noted that, while the gesture was well-intended, the message's language made her uneasy. She stated that the number and tone made her feel pitied rather than supported.
“When I saw the alert, I felt like sending it back and adding ₦90,000,” she added.
Similar discussions arose in mid-2024, when Nigerians on social media refused unsolicited financial presents from diaspora friends, claiming that economic distress is not limited to Nigeria.
