The Rivers State Government has announced a statewide enforcement exercise to shut down unapproved private schools operating across the state, with operations set to commence on Monday, 15, June, 2026.
The announcement, made through the Rivers State Ministry of Education, targets institutions operating without proper registration, official approval, or adherence to required academic and infrastructural standards.
It underscores the government’s commitment to quality assurance, child welfare, and regulatory compliance in private education.
According to a public interest statement signed by the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Peters Nwagor, and issued by the Head of Information and Public Relations, Tochi Abinye Pepple, the exercise will enforce the provisions of the Rivers State Private Schools Law and other relevant regulations.
“Private schools operating without registration and official approval from the Ministry of Education, as well as schools failing to meet the required educational standards, will be shut down,” the statement reads.
Dr. Nwagor emphasized that the measure aims to ensure children in Rivers State receive quality education in safe and conducive learning environments.
He also directed all approved private schools with outstanding annual renewal fees to settle their arrears immediately.
Only institutions with valid approval certificates and up-to-date payment records will be permitted to continue operations.
School proprietors seeking clarification or further information have been advised to visit the State Quality Assurance Services (SEQAS) Office at Government Girls’ Secondary School (GGSS), Rumuokwuta, Port Harcourt, or contact the Director of SEQAS, Dr. Chinedu Wordu.
