Port Harcourt, Nigeria — Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has visited the site of the collapsed four-storey building in Port Harcourt to assess the situation and monitor ongoing rescue operations following the tragic incident that trapped several persons beneath the rubble.
During the inspection on Thursday, Fubara praised emergency responders and rescue personnel for what he described as their commitment and courage in searching for and rescuing victims from the debris. He also expressed sympathy to families of those who lost loved ones in the collapse and wished the injured a speedy recovery as rescue efforts continued.
The governor used the visit to clarify that approval for the collapsed building was issued by a federal agency, not by the Rivers State Government, a statement that may shape the growing public debate over accountability and oversight surrounding the project.
The building, located around the Peter Odili axis of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, collapsed on Wednesday while still under construction. The incident came less than 48 hours after another three-storey building collapsed in the Rumuolumeni axis of the state capital, heightening fresh concerns over building safety, regulatory enforcement and structural standards in Rivers State.
The back-to-back collapses have triggered public alarm in Port Harcourt and are likely to intensify calls for a wider investigation into construction practices, approval processes and the role of relevant agencies in monitoring high-rise developments across the city.
