The Federal Government has commenced agricultural input support for farmers in North Central states as part of efforts to boost wet-season farming and improve food production.
Administered through the National Agricultural Development Fund, the intervention targets more than 120,000 smallholder farmers across Niger, Benue, Nasarawa and Kwara States.
Over 80,000 bags of fertiliser have been distributed under the programme.
The intervention is aimed at reducing some of the major production challenges facing rural farmers during the wet farming season.
According to the National Agricultural Development Fund, the fertiliser distribution forms part of efforts to advance President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda on food security and agricultural productivity.
At the flag-off ceremony, officials signed a Memorandum of Understanding formally handing over the fertiliser to representatives of participating states for onward distribution to farmers.
Authorities say monitoring and evaluation mechanisms have also been put in place to prevent diversion and ensure the inputs reach intended beneficiaries.
Limited access to affordable farm inputs remains a major challenge for local food production.
Project coordinators say expanding access to agricultural inputs and strengthening local production are critical to stabilising commodity prices and supporting regional economic growth.
