LAGOS, Nigeria - Prominent human rights lawyer Femi Falana has called for the immediate rescue of the pupils and teachers abducted in Oyo State, expressing concern over their continued captivity.
Speaking on the security situation in the country, Falana lamented the plight of the victims, stating that the abducted children and their teachers are enduring severe hardship while awaiting rescue.
“Those children are suffering,” Falana said, urging security agencies and government authorities to intensify efforts to secure their freedom without delay.
The senior lawyer also questioned the state of Nigeria's democratic system, arguing that the country is operating under what he described as “civil rule” rather than a full democracy.
“We don’t have democracy in Nigeria; we have civil rule,” he stated.
Falana's remarks come amid growing public concern over the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, a development that has sparked nationwide calls for stronger action against kidnappers and armed criminal groups.
Civil society organisations, political leaders, religious groups, and concerned citizens have continued to demand the safe return of the victims while urging authorities to strengthen security measures across vulnerable communities.
The abduction has further intensified debates about insecurity, governance, and the protection of educational institutions across Nigeria.
