The Edo State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old woman, identified as Osasere, for allegedly throwing her five-year-old son into River Ovia in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of the state.
According to reports, local fishermen quickly intervened after the incident, apprehending the suspect and preventing an angry mob from attacking her. They also launched a search operation on the river in an effort to locate the child.
In a video circulating online, the woman claimed she became worried because her son had not started walking despite being five years old. She further alleged that she had suffered multiple miscarriages after his birth.
Osasere stated that a friend introduced her to a seer who allegedly told her the child was responsible for her misfortunes and advised her to throw him into the river if she wanted to conceive again.
Confirming the incident, the Edo State Police Command said the suspect was arrested immediately and remains in custody while investigations continue.
The tragic incident has sparked outrage and renewed conversations about the dangers of harmful spiritual advice, child protection, and the need for greater public awareness on mental health and medical issues.
