China has confirmed the arrest of a US citizen, a scholar, on allegations of spying and endangering national security.
According to reports, the individual—identified as U Min Zin, a Myanmar-focused think tank director—was detained in early June while in the Chinese city of Kunming, near the border with Myanmar. He was reportedly taken into custody at an airport while attending a meeting.
Chinese authorities have not released full details of the case, but confirmed the arrest on national security grounds. The incident is being described as unusual, given the rarity of such detentions involving US nationals on espionage-related accusations.
The arrest comes at a sensitive diplomatic moment, shortly after high-level engagements between US and Chinese leadership, and ahead of an upcoming visit by Myanmar’s military leadership to Beijing.
Min Zin, who is also reported to be affiliated with academic and policy institutions in the US and Southeast Asia, is said to have a background in Myanmar’s pro-democracy movement and currently works on regional political analysis.
His family is reportedly in contact with US consular officials as concerns grow over his safety and legal situation.
As of now, further details surrounding the charges and legal proceedings remain unclear.
