According to a report by The Punch on Saturday, June 13, 2026, Nigerian inmates detained at the AbaSamuel Prisons in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, have erupted in celebration following a breakthrough diplomatic breakthrough between both nations.
The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially signed a bilateral Prisoner Transfer Agreement with the Ethiopian government, laying the groundwork for convicted citizens to return home.
The successful negotiation was spearheaded by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu.
Under the terms of this landmark accord, eligible Nigerian prisoners currently serving out various sentences in East Africa will be legally permitted to repatriate to Nigeria to complete their remaining custodial terms.
This cross-border arrangement aims to help inmates serve their time closer to their domestic families and established emotional support networks.
Reacting to the successful diplomatic mission on Saturday via her official X handle, Ojukwu painted a vivid picture of the breakthrough, noting that the policy has brought immense relief to incarcerated nationals.
“The atmosphere was absolutely electric. Our incarcerated nationals were ecstatic! Happiness Renewed; Hope Renewed,” she wrote.
Ojukwu further explained that the prisoners expressed profound gratitude toward President Bola Tinubu for remembering them, describing their reaction as "pure unaltered joy at the prospects of returning to their homeland."
Overjoyed by the prospect of repatriation, the inmates openly praised the current administration for prioritizing the legal interests and fundamental well-being of citizens detained beyond the nation's borders.
The Minister reemphasized that under the federal government's Renewed Hope Agenda, protecting the ultimate welfare of overseas Nigerians remains an essential, non-negotiable priority for diplomacy.
