According to a video on the Chude Podcast aired on Monday, June 1, 2026, former Minister of Transportation and ex-Director-General of President Muhammadu Buhari’s presidential campaign, Rotimi Amaechi, has recounted a revealing private encounter with the former president during his time in office.
Amaechi said the meeting, which took place at the Presidential Villa, left a strong impression on him and later shaped his reflections on the Buhari administration and its performance expectations.
He explained that he arrived at the Villa unannounced and requested a brief audience with President Buhari. According to him, the president was initially reluctant to grant the meeting due to a scheduled lunch engagement but eventually agreed to a short discussion in a reception area.
During the conversation, Amaechi said he reminded Buhari of the expectations of Nigerians who voted for him in 2015, suggesting that many believed they were electing a leader with the same drive and decisiveness associated with his earlier military rule in 1983.
He quoted Buhari as responding that the circumstances were different, noting that he was older and that the political environment now included a parliamentary system and other constraints.
Amaechi said the exchange led him to conclude that the former president was already feeling the weight of the office. He added that after narrating the encounter to his wife, she interpreted Buhari’s remarks as an admission that he was overwhelmed by the demands of leadership.
While reflecting on the experience, Amaechi stressed that he was not attempting to portray Buhari negatively on a personal level. He acknowledged that the administration recorded achievements in infrastructure, including roads, railways, and water projects.
However, he maintained that there remained a significant gap between public expectations at the time of Buhari’s election and the eventual outcomes of his administration
