ABUJA, Nigeria – Former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, has reportedly agreed to serve as the running mate to the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, ahead of the 2027 general election.
The development was confirmed on Saturday by the immediate past Rivers State chairman of the ADC, Leader Sampson, according to reports.
Amaechi, who contested the party’s presidential primary election, lost to Atiku during the selection process.
Before the primary election, the former Rivers State governor had publicly declared that he did not purchase the ADC presidential nomination form with the intention of later accepting a vice-presidential position.
Following the primary, Amaechi also expressed strong reservations about the outcome, amid allegations by some aggrieved party members that the process was skewed in favour of Atiku.
However, when asked whether Amaechi had now accepted the vice-presidential slot, Leader Sampson responded in the affirmative, saying simply: “Yes.”
The reported agreement is expected to strengthen the ADC ticket as the opposition party prepares for the 2027 presidential election.
Neither Atiku nor Amaechi had immediately issued an official public statement on the development at the time of filing this report.
