A female student of an undisclosed higher institution has sparked reactions online after accusing her school authorities of allegedly sharing students’ personal information with a bank to open accounts without their consent.
In a viral video, the visibly upset student claimed students were initially informed that they were registering for a “smart ID card,” only to later discover that the identification cards also functioned as ATM cards linked to bank accounts allegedly created in their names.
According to her, many students began receiving emails from the bank notifying them that accounts had been opened, despite never applying for one themselves.
The student further alleged that students were made to pay for the so-called smart ID cards and were later pressured by attendants to download the bank’s mobile application while collecting the cards.
Expressing frûstration over the development, she questioned why the institution and financial organization allegedly failed to seek students’ permission before using their personal details.
“So apparently our school went to open bank accounts for us without our permission, they literally sold our data to these people. Why didn’t you ask us first before using our details to open a bank account in our name?” she said.
The incident has since triggered widespread debate online, with several Nigerians claiming the practice is not new and that many schools allegedly partner with financial institutions in similar arrangements.
However, others raised concerns about privacy, consent, and data protection, questioning whether such actions are legal under Nigerian law, especially if students were not properly informed or did not explicitly authorize the accounts to be created.
As of the time of this report, neither the institution nor the bank involved has officially responded to the allegations.
