Opposition political parties across Nigeria reportedly raced against time on Saturday to submit updated membership registers to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before the midnight deadline ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The urgency followed INEC’s earlier decision on March 27 to extend the deadline for submission of party membership registers to May 10, 2026.
According to the electoral body, political parties are required to submit their membership registers at least 21 days before conducting party primaries.
INEC had also fixed May 30 as the final date for party primaries, meaning any party planning to hold primaries on that date must submit its digital membership register no later than May 9.
The development comes amid rising tension within opposition camps, concerns over possible disqualification of aspirants, and ongoing coalition discussions ahead of the next election cycle.
Political observers believe the deadline could significantly shape alliances, internal party battles, and the overall dynamics of the 2027 elections.
