A communiqué drafting committee from the recent reconciliation meeting involving Hyacinth Iormem Alia and George Akume has dismissed reports claiming that automatic tickets were approved for members of the National Assembly and Benue State House of Assembly.
In a disclaimer signed by the Deputy Governor of Benue State, Sam Ode, the committee described the publication in some national dailies as misleading and not representative of the outcome of the reconciliation meeting.
The statement clarified that the resolutions circulating in the media did not emanate from the official communiqué drafting committee, which was chaired by Ode. According to the document, the committee only prepared a draft for consideration by Governor Alia and the SGF, and did not authorize any final communiqué.
It further stressed that at no point in the draft was the issue of automatic tickets for any category of political aspirants discussed or approved.
“The committee that was set up to draft the communiqué only did a draft for the Governor and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation for their input and approval,” the statement read, adding that any valid communiqué from the meeting would bear the signatures of the governor and the SGF—not those of the drafting committee members.
The disclaimer also raised concerns over the authenticity of signatures attached to the published advertorial, describing them as mere attendance signatures from committee meetings rather than authorization for any official position.
The committee warned that those behind the publication were undermining the reconciliation process and misrepresenting the positions of key stakeholders, including Governor Alia, Senator Akume, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership.
It also referenced remarks made during the meeting by APC National Vice Chairman (North Central), Mohammed Muazu Bawa, who reportedly reiterated that the party’s position remains the adoption of direct primaries for candidate selection.
Reaffirming its position, the committee emphasized that it lacks the authority to issue or sign any communiqué on behalf of the conveners of the meeting.
