Lere Olayinka, a media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has responded to recent criticisms made by former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi regarding the ideological direction and internal structure of the All Progressives Congress.
Fayemi had expressed concern over what he described as a significant departure of the APC from the core principles on which it was originally founded. He made the remarks during an appearance on the podcast State of Affairs, hosted by Edmond Obilo, where he discussed the evolution of the ruling party and its current political culture.
According to the former governor, the APC has gradually lost its original ideological clarity and now operates in a way that no longer reflects the reformist vision championed by its founding members. He argued that instead of serving as a guiding ideological platform for governance, the party has increasingly become an extension of government power rather than an independent force shaping policy direction.
Fayemi further raised concerns about the growing reliance on consensus-based candidate selection within the party, warning that such a practice could weaken internal democracy and potentially lead to serious internal fractures. He cautioned that when consensus is used to override competitive processes, it could create resentment among party members and eventually destabilize the party structure.
In his words, “The danger of consensus is implosion in the APC.”
