A fresh political storm is brewing within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as the party’s leadership in Kano has openly resisted alleged attempts by Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to take control of its structure in the state.
The Kano State NDC Chairman, Usaini Isa Mai Riga, declared that the party would not hand over its structure to Kwankwaso, despite ongoing political realignments and negotiations following the former governor’s recent association with the party.
According to reports, the standoff followed failed meetings aimed at integrating Kwankwaso into the party framework, with disagreements centering on control of the party machinery. 
Mai Riga accused Kwankwaso of pushing for a complete takeover of the party’s structure in Kano, a demand he described as unacceptable given the efforts of existing members who built the party from the ground up. 
“He wants us to hand over the entire party to him… we will not allow the rights of our members to be trampled upon,” the chairman reportedly stated, signaling a hardline stance amid rising tensions. 
The crisis is unfolding at a critical moment for the NDC, which has recently attracted high-profile political figures amid a wider opposition realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections. 
Kwankwaso, a major northern political force, is seen as a key player in the evolving coalition politics, but the resistance from Kano party leadership highlights deep internal fractures that could threaten cohesion within the emerging platform.
