According to a video posted on the official YouTube channel of Channels Television on Monday, May 11, 2026, public affairs analyst Dayo Akintobi said the political battle over the governorship ticket in Rivers State is far from settled despite recent developments surrounding Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Akintobi spoke during a discussion on the ongoing political tension within the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 elections. He reacted to reports surrounding Fubara’s screening process and the growing influence of former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, in the state’s political structure.
According to him, “Whether he was asked to take a bow and leave or not, he is not going to coast freely to the ticket; Wike's candidate was also screened.”
The analyst explained that the Rivers political crisis remains active because both camps are preparing strongly for the next governorship contest. He noted that although Fubara’s recent alignment with the APC was initially seen as a strategic advantage, the situation has become more complicated due to competing interests within the party.
Akintobi also suggested that powerful stakeholders within the APC may determine how the party eventually handles the issue of consensus and candidate selection in Rivers State. He added that securing the support of party leaders and influential figures would play a major role in deciding who eventually emerges as the party’s preferred governorship candidate.
