Political stakeholder George Ariolu has claimed that supporters of Siminalayi Fubara were misled during the political crisis involving the Rivers State governor and former governor Nyesom Wike.
Speaking during an interview on News Central TV, Ariolu said Fubara had earlier agreed not to seek a second term as part of efforts to stop his impeachment by the Rivers State House of Assembly before the intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to him, the governor never fully explained the situation to his supporters after the crisis was resolved. He said many of Fubara’s followers were made to believe things would improve politically, adding that some of them still find it difficult to accept reports that the governor had stepped down from the governorship race.
Ariolu also questioned whether Fubara officially entered the race in the first place, saying there was no clear information on whether he personally obtained and submitted nomination forms.
He further stated that even if the governor had planned to contest, the political situation showed that defeat was likely. Ariolu said the governor may have decided to step aside after realizing the chances against him were too strong.
In his words, "His followers were fed with these lies and make-believe that it will get better, even till this moment, some of them do not believe that the governor himself has made this statement."
