According to a report by Vanguard on Monday, May 11, 2026, fresh controversy has erupted within the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress following reports that dozens of aspirants linked to Governor Siminalayi Fubara were allegedly disqualified from contesting the party’s State House of Assembly primaries ahead of the 2027 elections.
Reports circulating on social media had claimed that the party’s screening committee cleared 33 aspirants believed to be loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, while 65 aspirants associated with Fubara were reportedly denied clearance after the screening exercise involving 98 contestants.
However, the APC screening committee distanced itself from the publication, insisting that no official list of cleared or disqualified aspirants had been released. In a statement issued by the committee secretary, Hon. Tanko Yamowa, the party described the report as misleading and aimed at causing unrest within its ranks.
“We therefore urge party faithful, aspirants, supporters, and the general public to disregard the purported list and treat it as the handiwork of mischief-makers whose intention is to create confusion and unnecessary tension within the party,” the statement partly read.
The committee explained that the screening exercise had only recently been concluded and assured members that any official outcome would be communicated through the party’s approved channels. The APC also reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, fairness and due process throughout the screening and primary election process in Rivers State.
