According to a report by Daily Post, The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Chijioke Chukwu, has declared that the party will no longer accept the imposition of candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Chukwu made this position clear during a meeting held at the party’s state headquarters in Umuahia, where he interacted with aspirants, including Mayor Lucky Igbokwe, who is contesting for the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency seat. The gathering was part of early consultations aimed at setting the tone for internal party processes as the next election cycle approaches.
He stressed that the era where individuals or groups single-handedly determine candidates for the party is over, insisting that such practices will not be tolerated under his leadership. According to him, candidate selection must now be guided strictly by internal democracy, fairness, and equal opportunity for all aspirants.
Chukwu further assured party members that every contestant would be given a level playing field to seek the party’s ticket, without interference from influential figures within or outside the state structure.
He emphasized that the leadership is committed to building a transparent system where credibility and competence, rather than connections or favoritism, determine outcomes.
He also noted that the Abia APC has deliberately moved away from past practices where, according to him, certain individuals used the party’s platform primarily as a pathway to secure federal positions for themselves or their associates.
He argued that such practices previously weakened the party’s reputation and eroded trust among grassroots members who expect fairness and accountability from leadership.
The chairman explained that ongoing reforms within the party are aimed at strengthening internal structures and rebuilding confidence among members.
He added that decisions regarding candidates will be collectively determined through due process, rather than being influenced by external pressure or directives from powerful political actors at the national level.
Reiterating his stance, Chukwu maintained that the party’s leadership would not compromise on its commitment to internal democracy.
He said the goal is to ensure that only candidates who enjoy genuine support, acceptability, and proven capability within the party emerge to fly its flag in elections.
He concluded firmly, saying: “We have returned power to the people. Nobody can sit in one place and hand out tickets to anyone.
