Italy’s Sports Minister, Andrea Abodi, has firmly shut down suggestions that Italy national football team could sneak back into the 2026 FIFA World Cup through administrative means.
The idea surfaced after Italian-born U.S. envoy Paolo Zampolli reportedly proposed that Italy replace Iran national football team if geopolitical tensions force a withdrawal. He even cited Italy’s four World Cup titles as justification.
But Abodi made Italy’s stance crystal clear:
“It’s not possible and not appropriate. Qualification must be earned on the pitch.”
Italy’s absence follows a painful play-off defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team—another setback for the four-time champions.
Meanwhile, Gianni Infantino has reiterated that Iran’s place in the tournament remains secure, with matches scheduled to be played in the United States.
